GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader with Kean University on Saturday. Rowan won the first game 10-3 while Kean took the second 4-3 in nine innings.
Rowan has an overall record of 17-3 and Kean is 14-2 on the season. Both teams are 1-1 in the conference.
In the first game, Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) pitched a complete game for her ninth victory. Sasko (9-1) recorded nine strikeouts. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) went four for four with two RBIs. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had two hits (four at bats), a triple, one RBI and three runs scored. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with a double and two RBIs. Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) added two hits in four at bats, one RBI and one run scored.
For Kean, shortstop Johanna Hedler (sr. S. Plainfield, NJ/S. Plainfield) went two for three with two RBIs. Center fielder Allison Lizzi (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) had two hits in three trips to the plate. Pitcher Courtney Smyth (fr. Abington, PA/Abington) suffered her first loss
(6-1) this year.
The Cougars tied the score at one in the top of the second inning. Hedler walked with the bases loaded and pinch runner Lindsay Kennedy (fr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) scored. In the bottom half, Rowan went up 5-1 after scoring four runs. Smith doubled in the first run and Wallace followed with a two RBI double. Taraschi’s singled brought home Wallace.
The Profs also had four runs in the third. Shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) led off with a single and later scored on a balk. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice and left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) came home on a balk. Taraschi had a RBI single that scored Brenner. In the fifth, both teams scored one run. Hedler’s single drove in the run for the Cougars while Brown’s ground out scored Carangelo for the Profs. Kean’s final run came in the fifth inning. Second baseman Sarah Steinman (jr. Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
The score was tied at one after seven innings in the final game. In the eighth, Wallace started on second base because of the international tie breaker rule. Taraschi moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Sasko recorded a home run over the left field fence. Kean came back and tied the score in the bottom half. Steinman doubled in the first run and scored on an error. Hedler’s RBI single won the game in the ninth.
Rowan got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Brenner led off with a single and scored on a double by Wallace. Kean tied the score in the bottom of the third. Lizzi went home on a sac fly by third baseman Kara Schultz (sr. Clinton, NJ/N. Hunterdon).
Rowan travels to Swarthmore College on Sunday, March 30 for a 1 p.m. nonconference doubleheader.
