Baseball Beats Richard Stockton, 21-5 in NJAC Opener

POMONA, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Richard Stockton College, 21-5 in its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener Thursday.

Rowan improves to 13-3 overall. Richard Stockton has a 12-4 overall record and a 0-1 NJAC mark. Right hander Anthony Cavalier (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits. He recorded 11 strikeouts for his first collegiate victory. Lefty Michael Cox (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) threw the final two innings in relief. Right handed pitcher Amit Shah (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) took the loss on the mound for the Ospreys.

Rowan was led by right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) with four hits (six at bats), four runs scored, two RBIs, a home run and a double. Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) added three hits (five at bats), four runs scored, three RBIs, a double and a triple. Catcher Robert Fox (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) was three for five with four RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Designated hitter Matt Johanson (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with two hits in three trips to the plate, three runs scored, two RBIs and a double. First baseman Tom Holmstrom (fr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) chipped in with a solo home run.

For Richard Stockton, outfielder Joe Sacerdote (sr. Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went one for three with a double and scored once. First baseman Scott Fisher (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had two hits (five at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a home run.

Rowan went up 8-0 after scoring three runs in the second inning and five in the third. Richard Stockton got on the scoreboard with one run in the third. Rowan added one run in the fifth and 11 in the sixth. The Profs went up 21-1 after scoring one run in the eighth. The Ospreys scored twice in the eighth and ninth innings.

Rowan hosts The College of New Jersey in a NJAC game on Friday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.
