Rowan Takes Two Against Haverford, 6-1 and 8-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two games against Haverford College on Thursday. Rowan had a 6-1 victory in the opener and an 8-0 (six innings) shutout in the nightcap.

In the first game, Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) pitched a complete game for her eighth win of the season. Sasko (8-1) scattered five hits and struck out nine batters. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went three for four with one RBI. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) contributed with two RBIs and catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) scored two runs.

Haverford got on the scoreboard first in the second inning. Pitcher Cassandra Searls (so. Green Brook, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) led off with a double and scored on a single by designated player Samantha Fontinell (jr. Islip, NY/Islip). Rowan came back and tied the score in the bottom half. Taraschi crossed the plate on Navarro’s sacrifice fly. The Profs took the lead with one run in the fourth when shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) doubled in Sasko.

Rowan led 3-1 after the fifth inning. Left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audbon) reached base with a walk and later scored on a single by Brenner. The Profs sealed the victory with three runs in the sixth. Navarro had a sac fly that scored Taraschi. Pinch runner Loren Pashley (so. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) came home on an error and Brown had a sac bunt, scoring Carangelo.

Pitcher Amanda Riegel (sr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) threw six innings for win in the second game. It was her first shutout of the year. Navarro had one hit (two at bats), three RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went two for four with a triple and two runs scored. Taraschi added two hits in three at bats, a double, one RBI and one run scored.

The Profs went up 1-0 in the first inning. Smith tripled to left field and she came home on a single by Sasko. Rowan tacked on three runs in the fourth. Pashley scored on a fielder’s choice, Carangelo came home on a wild pitch and Navarro scored on an error. After the fifth, the Profs led 7-0. Wallace singled in Smith and Navarro had a two RBI double. Taraschi ended the game in the sixth with a RBI double.

Rowan starts its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule at home on Saturday, March 29 against Kean University at 1 p.m.
