Rowan Ends Florida Trip With Two Victories

KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team ended its Florida trip with two victories on Friday. Rowan defeated SUNY Geneseo, 8-1 and Allegheny College (PA), 5-4.

The Profs are 12-2 overall. Rowan went 7-1 at the Rebel Spring Games during spring break. In the Geneseo game, Amanda Riegel (sr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) was the winning pitcher. Riegel (4-0) pitched five innings and only allowed three hits. Brianna Seckinger (fr. Churchville, PA/Council Rock S.) was on the mound for the last two innings and did not give up a hit.

Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) led the Profs with two hits (three at bats), a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had two hits (four at bats) and scored one run. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) added two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.

Rowan went up 6-0 in the top of the first inning and Geneseo’s lone run came in the bottom half. Brenner scored the first run on a fielder’s choice. Designated player Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, Steinert) knocked in right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) with a single. Taraschi came home on error and shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) crossed the plate on Navarro’s single. Sasko scored on a passed ball and left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) plated Navarro with a sacrifice bunt.

The Profs added two more runs in the sixth. Taraschi had a RBI double that scored third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.). Carangelo’s sacrifice fly brought home Taraschi.

Sasko recorded her sixth pitching victory against Allegheny. She (6-1) pitched a complete game and scattered six hits. Sasko struck out seven batters and had two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Wallace totaled four hits in four trips to the plate, one RBI and one run scored. Navarro went two for four with a double.

Rowan won the game with one run in the bottom of the seventh. Carangelo reached first on a fielder’s choice. She advanced to third on a double by Navarro. Pinch hitter Melanie Sura (jr. Linden, NJ/Linden) singled in Carangelo for the winning run.

Allegheny took the lead with one run in the first inning and Rowan tied it in the bottom. Smith scored on a fielder’s choice with Sasko at bat. The Gators went up 2-1 in the second and the Profs came back to tie up in the third. Wallace had the tying run on Carangelo’s sacrifice fly.

Allegheny was ahead 4-2 after the fifth inning and Rowan rallied for two runs in the sixth. Smith had a sac fly that scored left fielder Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta). Wallace had a RBI single that scored first baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).

Rowan is back at home against Gwynedd-Mercy College on Tuesday, March 25 at 3 p.m.
