COCOA, FL – The Rowan University baseball team suffered a 14-7 loss to Salisbury University at the Cocoa Expo on Wednesday.
Rowan is 8-3 overall, while Salisbury has a 14-1 record. Left hander Ryan Kulik (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) suffered his first loss of the year (3-1). He tossed four innings, giving up six earned runs and striking out nine hitters. Righty Todd Burdette (fr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings and Richard Pultar (so. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) threw the final 1.2 innings.
Designated hitter Matt Johanson (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) went two for four with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) added three hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman/first baseman Tom Ready (jr. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) contributed with three hits in five at bats, two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was two for five with a solo home run. Catcher Robert Fox (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) chipped in with two hits in four trips to the plate, one RBI and one run scored.
Salisbury jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Rowan cut the lead to 4-1 with one run in the bottom half. Ready hit a double that brought home Johanson. The Seagulls hit a grand slam in the second for an 8-1 advantage. McMullin had his solo homer in the bottom of the inning that made the score 8-2.
Salisbury added one run in the third and fourth innings to go up 10-2. In the bottom of the fifth, left fielder Frank Hasenauer (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) crossed home on a double by Johanson. Urbanovich knocked in Johanson with a single and Ready’s single plated Urbanovich to bring the Profs within five (10-5). Salisbury scored one run in the top of the sixth, but Rowan answered with one in the bottom half when Fox came home on a bases loaded walk by Johanson. Rowan scored its final run in the seventh after Fox singled in Ready. Salisbury tacked on three runs in the eighth inning to seal the victory.
Rowan continues its Florida trip at the Russ Matt Tournament on Thursday, March 20 when it faces Clarkson University at 9:30 a.m.
