KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won two more games at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday. Rowan shut out McDaniel College (MD), 8-0 in five innings and defeated Macalester College (MN), 8-4.
Pitcher Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) recorded her fourth shutout of the season against McDaniel. Sasko (5-1) only gave up one hit and had five strikeouts. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) went two for three with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with two hits (three at bats), a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added two hits in three at bats and scored two runs.
Rowan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Smith doubled in Brenner for the first run and later scored on an error. Brenner reached base with a single. Sasko had a RBI single that brought home Wallace. The Profs added five more runs in the second and won the game in five innings because of the eight run rule. In the second, first baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), Smith and Brenner all crossed the plate on Wallace’s double. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) plated Wallace with a single. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) had a sacrifice bunt that scored Taraschi.
In the Macalester game, pitcher Amanda Riegel (sr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) got the win on the mound. Riegel threw a complete game and scattered six hits. She struck out seven batters. Taraschi went four for four at the plate with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Smith followed with three hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Navarro contributed with three hits (three at bats), a double and one RBI. Wallace had two hits (five at bats), two RBIs and scored two runs.
Rowan went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Wallace scored on an error. In the fourth, the Profs racked up five more runs. Left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/ Audubon) doubled in shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.). Brown came home on a single by Smith. Wallace drove in Brenner and Smith with a single. Wallace had the last run of the inning on an error.
All four of Macalester’s runs came in the fifth inning. Rowan added two more runs in the sixth. Navarro had a RBI single that scored Taraschi. Designated player Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) came home on a sac fly by Brown.
Rowan (10-2) plays its last two games of the Florida trip on Friday, March 21 against SUNY Geneseo at 11 a.m. and Allegheny College at 3 p.m.
