GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball split its games at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday. Rowan lost to Wisconsin-River Falls, 2-0 in 10 innings and defeated Fontbonne University, 6-2.
Against Wisconsin-River Falls (8-1), pitcher Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) tossed a complete game. She struck out 14 hitters and allowed two unearned runs. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Audubon, NJ/Audubon), second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Sasko each had one hit for the Profs. Wisconsin-River Falls scored both of its runs in the top of the 10th inning.
Versus Fontbonne (0-8), pitcher Brianna Seckinger (fr. Churchville, PA/Council Rock S.) earned the win (2-0). She threw the final four innings, scattering two hits and striking out four batters. Pitcher Danielle Lawlor (jr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) started the game and gave up two hits and one earned run in three innings.
Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went two for three with two runs scored, one RBI and a triple. Taraschi added one hit (three at bats), one run scored, one RBI and a double. Catcher Melanie Sura (jr. Linden, NJ/Linden) was one for three with one run scored, one RBI and a double. Shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) recorded two hits in four trips to the plate and two RBIs.
Rowan went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Brenner got on base with a walk and stole second. Third baseman Kristin Wallace’s (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) bunt moved Brenner to third and Taraschi drove in Brenner with a double. Fontbonne tied the game in the bottom half of the first.
The Profs added three runs in the second inning. Sura doubled in Brown, who reached base with a single. Brenner followed with a triple that brought home Sura. Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) knocked in Brenner with a single. Fontbonne cut the deficit to two (4-2) with one run in the third. Rowan added two runs in the fourth to seal the victory. Wallace reached base on a walk and moved to second on a fielder’s choice by Taraschi. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and came home on Carangelo’s single.
Rowan (8-2) continues at the Rebel Springs Games with two games on Wednesday, March 19. Rowan plays McDaniel College at 3 p.m. and Macalester College at 5 p.m.
