KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team opened the Rebel Spring Games with wins over Westminster College (PA), 2-0 and Fontbonne University (MO), 9-1 in five innings.
Against Westminister, Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) was the winning pitcher. Sasko (3-0) pitched a complete game for her second shutout on the season. She only gave up two hits and recorded 10 strikeouts. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland, NJ) and third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) each had two hits in four at bats. Wallace also had one RBI.
Rowan scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, pinch runner Lauren Pashley (so. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) scored on an error and left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) reached first base. Wallace singled home Brenner in the fifth who had gotten on base with a single.
Amanda Riegel (sr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) pitched the no-hitter against Fontbonne. Riegel (2-0) allowed one run that was unearned and she struck out four batters. Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went two for three with one RBI and scored one run. First baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.
The Profs got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sasko recorded a RBI single that scored Smith and Wallace came home on an error. Rowan led 6-0 after one run in the third inning and three in the fourth. In the third, left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) singled in catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon). Shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) tripled in the three runs in the fourth.
Fontbonne’s lone run came in the top of the fifth and Rowan added three more in the bottom half. The game ended after five innings because of the eight run rule. In the fifth, Smith walked with the bases loaded and left fielder Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) scored. Wallace’s sacrifice bunt brought home DiDonato while Brenner crossed the plate on pinch hitter Alyssa Glenn’s (so. Woodbridge, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) single.
On Sunday, Rowan (5-1) plays Smith College (MA) at 11 a.m. and Bridgewater State College (MA) at 3 p.m.
