GLASSBORO, NJ – Left handed pitcher Ryan Kulik struck out 15 batters to lead Rowan University to a 7-0 win over Alvernia College in a nonconference game on Monday.
Kulik (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) tied Robert Pfeiffer’s (1977) school record for strikeouts in a game. He scattered three hits in six innings for his second victory of the season.
Rowan improves to 4-2 overall, while Alvernia has a 9-4 record. First baseman Rob Ritterson (sr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)) went two for four with four RBIs, two runs scored, a grand slam and a double. Designated hitter Matt Johanson (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) recorded two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Roland Rodriguez (so. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) had two hits in four at bats, one run scored and a double.
For Alvernia, third baseman Reid Martin (fr. Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) posted two hits (three at bats). Catcher Dale Curry (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) and left fielder Steve Burdan (sr. Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) had one hit apiece. Right hander Peter Fernandez (sr. Waldwick, NJ/Bogota) took the loss on the mound. He allowed five earned runs in four innings.
Rowan went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Ritterson got on base with a double to right field. Right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) followed with a single. The left fielder bobbled the ball, allowing Ritterson to score.
The Profs added five runs in the third inning. Rodriguez doubled to center field and second baseman Joe Franceschini (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) reached base on a walk. Rodriguez moved to third and Franceschini went to second on a passed ball. Third baseman Tom Ready (jr. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) walked to load the bases. Johanson drove in Rodriguez with a single to center field. Ritterson hit a grand slam down the right field line, bringing home Franceschini, Ready and Johanson.
Rowan added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. Center fielder Keith Evans (so. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) reached base on a fielder’s choice. He stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Johanson’s single through the right side scored Evans.
Rowan travels to Orlando, Florida for the Russ Matt Tournament from Saturday, March 15-Friday, March 21. On Saturday, Rowan will play Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 11 a.m. and Westfield State College (MA) at 3 p.m.
