VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team split games at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast on Saturday. Rowan defeated Moravian College, 3-1 and lost to the University of Rochester, 9-6.
Right hander Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) pitched a complete game for the victory against Moravian. Sasko scattered five hits and struck out 12 batters. Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) was two for four at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and scored one run. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim NJ/Audubon) added two hits in three at bats.
Rowan scored all three of its runs in the top of the second inning. Left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) got on a base with a fielder’s choice. Designated player Melanie Sura (jr. Linden, NJ/Linden) reached first on an error. Brenner singled to load the bases. Smith doubled to left center field, scoring Brown, Sura and Brenner. Moravian’s lone run came in the bottom half of the inning.
Against Rochester, Taraschi had two hits in two at bats, a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Sasko compiled three RBIs. The Yellowjackets jumped out to an 8-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and three in the second and the third. The Profs got on the scoreboard with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Taraschi led off with a solo home run. Brenner came home on an error. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) and pinch runner Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) both scored on the same passed ball. Rowan followed with two more runs in the sixth. Sasko singled in Taraschi and Brenner. Rochester’s final run came in the seventh inning.
Rowan returns from Virginia Beach with a 3-1 record. The Profs are off until they head to Kissimmee, Florida for the Rebel Spring Games, March 15-21
