Montclair State Defeats Visiting Rowan, 82-70

MONTCLAIR, NJ – Four players scored in double figures to lead Montclair State University over Rowan University, 82-70 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

Guard James Williams (fr. Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) totaled a game-high 23 points for the Red Hawks. Guard Chris McCann (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) contributed with 18 points off the bench and guard Tom Bonard (fr. Westfield, NJ/Westfield) followed with 16. Bonard recorded seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Guard Ken Dudley (so. Willingboro, NJ/Burlington Tech) added 10 points and forward Ryan Washington (jr. Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) grabbed six rebounds.

Montclair State is 13-9 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Rowan has a 14-7 record with a 4-6 NJAC mark. The Red Hawks are in the conference’s North Division while the Profs are in the South.

For Rowan, guard Michael Farrow (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) tied his career-high with 18 points. Guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) and forward Matt Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) each scored 17 points. Forwards Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) and Rahim Shiver (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) grabbed eight rebounds apiece. Reevey also dished five assists.

Montclair State led 40-33 after the first half. The Red Hawks were ahead by nine points (46-37) after McCann’s jumper at 17:41 in the second stanza. Bonard’s foul shot at 16:46 made the score 49-41. Rowan followed with eight straight points to tie the score with 13:02 left. Byrnes made the first six points and Shiver’s jumper tied it. The score was tied two more times before MSU held on to the lead for the remainder of the game. Byrnes had a layup that tied the score at 64 with 4:32 remaining. Montclair State pulled away with a 13-2 run for an 11 point advantage (77-66) at 1:09. Bonard made eight of the 13 points. He had 13 points in the second half and Williams scored 16. Farrow led the Profs with 15 points.

Three times the score was tied in the first period and the last one came with 3:42 remaining. Washington made a layup that tied the score at 26 and his foul shot gave the Red Hawks a one point lead. Byrnes hit a jumper that put the Profs up 28-26 with 3:22 on the clock. MSU closed the period with a 14-5 run for a seven point advantage (40-33) at the intermission. McCann posted 11 of the 14 points.

Rowan is on the road again at Valley Forge Christian College on Tuesday, February 12 at 8 p.m.
