POMONA, NJ – Guard Kristina Wallace scored 22 points to lead Rowan University over host Richard Stockton College, 68-64 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
Wallace (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) was seven for 12 from the floor with three three-pointers and five for seven from the line. She also totaled five rebounds and five assists. Forward Ashley Cieplicki (jr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) contributed with 13 points and eight boards. Forward Jessica Nimbley (so. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) added 11 points and five rebounds.
Rowan is 13-7 overall and 6-3 in the conference. Richard Stockton has an 11-10 record and a 4-4 NJAC mark. In the first meeting this season (Jan. 9), the Profs defeated the Ospreys, 74-54 in Glassboro.
For Stockton, guard Lisa Neira (sr. Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) compiled 22 points and forward Kelley Guarrera (jr. Shamong, NJ/Shawnee) followed with 16. Forward Kristin Sciarrillo (fr. Edison, NJ/Edison) pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds and 12 were defensive boards.
After the first half, Richard Stockton was ahead 37-32. Wallace’s layup tied the score at 39 with 17:04 remaining in the game. The Ospreys went back up by one (40-39) after a foul shot by Guarrera at 16:40. Rowan answered with five straight points to lead 44-40 and Cieplicki’s free throw at 15:14 put the Profs up by four. Stockton went back up by one point (45-44) at 14:16 when Guarrera made a jumper. Wallace’s layup put Rowan on top again (46-45) with 12:44 left. The Profs then had nine unanswered points for a 10 point advantage (55-45) at 8:19. Wallace had two baskets in the run. The Ospreys rallied with an 11 point surge to retake the lead (56-55). The first six points came at the free throw line and Neira followed with a three (5:12) and a jumper (4:35).
With 3:35 remaining, Nimbley’s layup made the score 59-58 in the Profs’ favor. Forward Jenn Russell (jr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) tied the score at 59 (3:13) when she made the second of two free throws. Nimbley had a basket that put the Profs up for good (61-59) with 3:04 left. At the end, Guarrera’s jumper pulled the Ospreys within two points (66-64) at the 10 second mark. Wallace sealed the victory at 0:09 with two free throws. She had 12 points in the second half.
The score was tied four times in the first period. The last tie was at 26 when guard Brynn DeGroff (jr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) hit a three-pointer for Rowan. Sciarrillo grabbed a rebound and had a jumper to take back the lead (28-26) for the Ospreys at 3:31. Russell’s free throw gave Stockton a six point advantage (32-26) with 2:28 remaining. Rowan guard Gina Catanzariti (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) made a three to cut the deficit to two (34-32) at the 31 second mark. Neira completed a three-point play (0:18) to end the scoring. She finished the half with 12 points while Wallace led the Profs with 10.
Rowan is on the road again at Montclair State University on Saturday, February 9 at 2 p.m.
