CHESTER, PA – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team opened the 2008 season with a 15-3 victory over Widener University on Thursday.
Rowan (1-0) was led by attack Caitlin Meseroll (sr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) with five goals and one assist. Attacks Lauren Crennan (jr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and Tori Hart (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added three goals apiece. Midfielder Ali Goodman (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had one goal and two assists. Attack Stacie McKinley (jr. Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) and midfielders Patricia Harrington (fr. Suffern, NY/Suffern) and Nicole Valianti (fr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) each scored once. Midfielders Carly Welsh (jr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) and Kelly Angstadt (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) recorded one assist apiece.
For Widener (0-1), midfielder Kerri Schulz (sr. Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) scored two goals and attack Brittany Dippolito (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) had one. Attacks Grace Cavanaugh (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and Jackie Elliott (so. Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) each compiled one assist.
Rowan out shot Widener, 42-12. Goalie Alicia Mannino (jr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) made four saves in the Profs’ net. Goalie Jill Cummings (fr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) stopped 19 shots for the Pride.
Rowan jumped out to a 15-0 lead before Widener got on the scoreboard. In the first half, Meseroll had back-to-back unassisted goals at 00:55 and 3:25. McKinley and Goodman contributed with goals at 6:43 and 27:03, respectively.
In the second period, Meseroll had a goal at 30:29 with an assist from Angstadt. Harrington found the back of the net at 32:20. Hart scored three straight goals at 32:38, 33:21 and 34:41 to give the Profs a 9-0 advantage. Crennan posted three goals (35:10, 46:15 and 53:49), Meseroll had two (48:32 and 51:33) and Valianti added one (12:03). Widener had a goal from Dippolito with 4:22 remaining. Schulz scored with 3:03 and 1:16 left on the clock to end the game.
Rowan hosts defending NCAA Division III National Champion Franklin & Marshall College in its home opener on Tuesday, March 4 at 4 p.m.
