ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College baseball team swept Rowan University in a doubleheader on Sunday. Randolph-Macon won the first game, 9-8 and the second, 12-4.
In the first game, right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went two for three with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop Roland Rodriguez (so. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) and designated hitter Matt Johanson (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) each contributed with two hits and one RBI. Rodriguez had a triple and Johanson hit a double. Center fielder Garrett Mull (jr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) recorded a two run homer.
Gary Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) was the starter on the Profs’ mound. Winkler pitched six innings and gave up five runs, one was earned. Kevin O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) took the loss. O’Hara went one inning and allowed four earned runs.
Rowan trailed after three innings, 5-3. The Profs took the lead with two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. With two outs in the fourth, McMullin singled and Mull followed with a home run. In the sixth, McMullin doubled in both of the runs. The Yellow Jackets tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Rowan scored one run in the eighth when Rodriguez walked with the bases loaded. Randolph-Macon won the game with two runs in the bottom half. Pinch runner Steve Craun crossed home plate on a wild pitch and shortstop Chris Dykes had a sacrifice fly that scored center fielder James Bierlein.
In the second game, second baseman Joe Franceschini (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had two hits (four at bats), a double and one run scored. First baseman Tom Ready (jr. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) added two RBIs while shortstop Tim Barnshaw (jr. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) scored two runs. Starter Joe Cichy (sr. Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) suffered the loss. Cichy pitched four innings and gave up seven earned runs.
Randolph-Macon had a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Rowan went ahead 3-2 in the top of the third. Designated hitter Roger Turley (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) singled in the first run and Ready drove in Turley and Franceschini with a single. The Yellow Jackets came back with four runs in the bottom half of the third and they added one more in the fourth. The Profs’ final run came in the fifth. Barnshaw scored on a wild pitch after he had gotten on base with a single.
Rowan is scheduled to host Worcester State College in the home opener on Saturday, March 1 at noon.
