NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving competed in the final day of the Metropolitan Championships on Sunday. The men finished the three day meet third overall with 1,139.5 points, while the women came in fourth with 902 points. The College of New Jersey men and women captured first place with 1,500.5 and 1,300.5 points respectively.
The men’s 400 freestyle relay of Kevin Baker (sr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Andrew Williams (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge), Dan Kelley (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) and Jimmy Smith (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) took third place in 3:08.75.
Baker captured second place in the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:06.59 which was better than the NCAA B cut (2:08.60). Kevin Wallace (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) was fourth in the 200 butterfly (1:57.75) and James Sheerin (sr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) followed sixth (1:58.57). Jeremy Soto (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) and David Shinton (sr. Newark, DE/Newark) were 10th (2:00.09) and 12th (2:03.90) respectively.
Smith finished seventh in the 100 freestyle (47.99). In the consolation final, Kelley took ninth (47.63), Williams was 10th (48.33), Chris Mahoney (fr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) was 11th (48.52) and Stephen Tucker (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) followed 13th (48.58). In the 200 backstroke, Brian McDermott (fr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) came in 11th (2:01.11).
In the one meter diving final, Bryan Carlisle (jr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) took fourth place with 413.53 points. Dave Bauer (jr. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) came in sixth (324.30 points) and Mark Balesteri (fr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) was seventh (321.43 points). In the women’s three meter diving, Stephanie Scarpa (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) finished sixth (239.55 points).
Rowan placed sixth in the women’s 400 freestyle relay final with a time of 3:44.74. The relay consisted of Samantha Edwards (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Christine DiRubbo (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Aileen Milde (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and Alicia Mackleer (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest).
Edwards captured third place in the 1650 freestyle (18.02.54), while Julianne Furdyna (fr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was 11th (19:06.74). In the 200 backstroke final, Kate Winters (fr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) came in fifth (2:12.77) and Stephanie McAllister (so. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was 12th (2:17.54).
Janina Wojcik (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) took eighth in the 100 freestyle (55.65). Milde and DiRubbo followed in 13th (55.67) and 14th (55.69) respectively. In the 200 breastroke final, Stacey Rahter (fr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) finished eighth (2:37.62). In the consolation final, Meghan McCourt (2:32.30) captured 10th (2:32.30) and Samantha King (so. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) was 12th (2:33.30). Anne O’Gorman (fr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) placed 11th in the 200 butterfly (2:17.77) followed by Ashley Gagnon (so. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy), 13th (2:21.37).
