NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished day two of the Metropolitan Championships on Saturday evening. The three-day event concludes on Sunday at Rutgers University.
The Rowan men’s 200 freestyle relay took third place (1:35.81) with Kevin Baker (sr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Kevin Ovalle (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Kevin Wallace (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Jimmy Smith (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.). The 800 freestyle relay finished third in 7:02.17. The free relay consisted of Baker, Wallace, Dan Kelley (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) and James Sheerin (sr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford).
In the finals, Baker was fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.69 which was a NCAA B cut (58.79). Wallace took sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.18. Smith had a sixth place in the 100 backstroke (54.23). Sheerin came in eighth (1:46.38) in the 200 freestyle. Ovalle finished ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.44) and Andrew Williams (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) was 14th (1:02.25).
David Shinton (sr. Newark, DE/Newark) was 10th in the 400 individual medley (4:25.79). Kelley finished 12th (53.39) the 100 butterfly followed by Stephen Tucker (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) 13th (53.81) and Brian McDermott (fr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) 16th (54.81). Jeremy Soto (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) took 11th in the 100 backstroke (54.99).
The Rowan women’s 800 freestyle relay came in fourth (8:06.72) while the 200 medley relay finished fifth (1:53.67). Christine DiRubbo (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Aileen Milde (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury), Kate Winters (fr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) and Samantha Edwards (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) were on the free relay. The medley relay included Winters, Meghan McCourt (so. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Janina Wojcik (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) and Alicia Mackleer (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest).
Edwards took fifth (1:58.30) in the 200 freestyle, Milde came in ninth (1:59.92) and Julianne Furdyna (fr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was 15th (2:03.59). In the 100 breaststroke, McCourt and Stacey Rahter (fr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) were seventh (1:10.75) and eighth (1:10.81) respectively. Ashley Gagnon (so. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) finished 10th (1:10.06) in the 100 breaststroke and Samantha King (so. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) was 13th (1:11.84).
In the 100 butterfly, Rahter took 10th place (1:01.03) followed by Anne O’Gorman (fr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) 11th (1:01.47) and Wojcik 12th (1:02.01). Winters had a ninth place in the 100 backstroke (1:02.02).
