GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team had six players score in double figures in an 80-65 win over Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

Rowan improves to 18-7 overall and 7-6 in the conference. Kean has a 9-16 record and a 4-9 NJAC mark. The Profs are the South Division’s second seed in the NJAC Championship Tournament. Rowan will host the third seed from the North Division Montclair State University on Tuesday, February 26 at 7 p.m. Kean is the third seed in the South and will travel to the second seed from the North Ramapo College for a first round game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. William Paterson University is the top seed from the North, while Richard Stockton College is first in the South. The semifinals are on Thursday, February 28 and the final will be held on Saturday, March 1.

Forward Matt Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) led the Profs with 23 points. Forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Reevey also had a game-high five blocked shots. Forward Rahim Shiver (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) posted 13 points, while guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) had 11. Guards Aaron Spellman (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) and Michael Farrow (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) each totaled 10 points and seven rebounds.

For Kean, guard Keith Williams (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) scored 17 points and had seven steals. Forward Lamar Wright (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) added 16 points and guard Dean Hughes (fr. Pemberton Twp., NJ/Pemberton) had 11.

Rowan was ahead 32-30 at the intermission. In the second period, the Profs led by one point (35-34) at 17:52. Rowan had an 11-2 surge to go up 46-36 at 15:05. Farrow scored four points, Spellman made a three-pointer while Reevey and Byrnes each had a layup. Kean trailed by eight (54-46) after two free throws by Wright at 12:38. The Profs posted a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 18 points (66-48) with 7:01 remaining. Byrnes recorded seven of the 12 points. Rowan’s largest lead of the game, 19 points (79-60) came at 1:04 after two foul shots by center Hendrick Salomon (sr. Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro).

In the first half, Farrow’s layup at 17:31 gave Rowan an 8-3 advantage. The Profs were up 12-8 at 16:16 when forward Sean Carter (jr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) nailed two three-pointers to give the Cougars a two point lead, 14-12. Shiver’s tip-in at 11:03 tied the game at 17. Byrnes connected on two free throws with 2:39 left to put Rowan ahead by three (30-27).

Kean guard Dean Hughes’ (fr. Pemberton Twp., NJ/Pemberton) three-pointer with 46 seconds on the clock tied the score at 30. Spellman made a jumper with 15 seconds remaining to give the Profs a 32-30 halftime advantage. Shiver led all first half scorers with nine points. Darby added eight points, while Reevey grabbed eight boards. Hughes, Carter and Wright totaled six points apiece for Kean.
