NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving competed in the first day of the Metropolitan Championships on Friday. The men totaled 157 points for fourth place, while the women are in fifth with 96 points. The College of New Jersey men are in first place with 258 points, while Southern Connecticut State University’s women are in the lead with 168.
The men’s 200 freestyle relay team of Dan Kelley (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Chris Mahoney (fr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.), Andrew Williams (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) and Kevin Ovalle (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) finished fourth in 1:26.06. The 400 medley relay took fourth place (3:31.31). The medley relay consisted of Jeremy Soto (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly), Kevin Baker (sr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Kevin Wallace (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Kelley.
In the 200 individual medley (IM), Baker captured eighth place (1:58.62), Soto was 11th (2:00.15) and Williams came in 12th (2:00.16). Kelley was in fifth (21.65) in the 50 freestyle, followed by Jimmy Smith (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.), ninth (21.75). In the finals of the 500 freestyle, James Sheerin (sr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) took 10th place (4:48.26) and Wallace was 14th (4:54.94).
In the three meter diving, Bryan Carlisle (jr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) finished second (507.00 points). Mark Balesteri (fr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) was sixth (367.58 points) followed by Dave Bauer (jr. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.), seventh (358.55). In the women’s 1 meter diving trials, Stephanie Scarpa (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) was in 12th place (215.45 points).
For the women, the 200 freestyle relay of Alicia Mackleer (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), Christine DiRubbo (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Janina Wojcik (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) and Aileen Milde (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) finished fifth (1:40.57). The 400 medley relay took sixth (4:10.19). The medley relay was made up of Stephanie McAllister (so. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Samantha King (so. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City), Anne O’Gorman (fr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Mackleer.
Samantha Edwards (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) took sixth in the 500 freestyle finals (5:15.50). King came in 12th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.41. In the 50 freestyle, Mackleer had an eighth place finish (25.00). Also in the 50 freestyle, DiRubbo captured 11th (25.20), Milde was 13th (25.62) and Wojcik was 14th (25.71).
The meet continues on Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24. Saturday’s trials are at 9:30 a.m. with the finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, the trials are at 9:30 a.m. followed by the finals at 5:30 p.m.
