GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University swim teams split victories with Kutztown University on Saturday in its final home meet of the season. The Prof men defeated the Golden Bears 135-69, while the women lost 108.5-96.5.
The Rowan men have a 7-3 record, while the women fall to 5-5. The Kutztown men are 6-2 overall and the women have a 9-2 mark.
The Prof men finished first in the 200 medley (1:38.58) and 200 freestyle (1:29.27) relays. The medley was comprised of Kevin Baker (sr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Kevin Ovalle (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Kevin Wallace (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Jimmy Smith (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.). Ovalle, Andrew Williams (sr. Philadelphia, PA), Dan Kelley (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) and Smith were on the freestyle relay.
The men secured eight individual first place finishes, including two each from Baker and Kelley. Baker won the 200 breaststroke (2:10.22) and 200 IM (1:59.98). Kelley was first in the 100 freestyle (48.66). He also won the 200 freestyle (1:48.33), followed by Jeremy Soto (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) in second (1:48.45). Soto finished first in the 200 backstroke (2:03.48), while Brian McDermott (fr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) was second (2:03.98).
Stephen Tucker (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) swam a winning time of 22.08 in the 50 freestyle, followed by Smith second (22.21) and Williams third (22.26). David Shinton (sr. Newark, DE/Newark) came in first in the 200 butterfly (2:03.81) and Tucker placed third (2:04.96). Shinton had a third place finish in the 1,000 freestyle (10:37.03). Wallace was first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.33.
Rowan’s women finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.50) and they were second in the 200 medley relay (1:56.09). Christine DiRubbo (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Janina Wojcik (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.), Aileen Milde (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and Alicia Mackleer (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made up the freestyle relay team. The medley relay with comprised of Stephanie McAllister (so. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Samantha King (so. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City), Wojcik and Mackleer.
The women had four first place finishes in the individual events, including two victories by Samantha Edwards (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown). Edwards won the 500 (5:15.82) and 1,000 (10:51.06) freestyles. Mackleer finished first in the 50 freestyle (24.92) and Wojcik was third (25.51).
Milde won the 100 freestyle (55.86), followed by DiRubbo in second (56.05). Milde was also second in the 200 freestyle (2:01.02). Anne O’Gorman (fr. Boontown, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Meghan McCourt (so. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had second places in the 200 butterfly (2:17.44) and 200 breaststroke (2:33.06), respectively. King was second in the 200 IM (2:17.75), while McAllister had a second place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:19.21).
Rowan travels to Rutgers University from Friday-Sunday, February 22-24 for the Metropolitan Championships.
