GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team won 88-58 over Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) led the Profs with 21 points and forward Matt Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) followed with 20. Forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) chipped in with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Rowan is 16-7 overall and 5-6 in the conference. Rutgers-Camden has a 5-9 record and a 2-10 NJAC mark. For the Scarlet Raptors, guard Brandon Canty (fr. Riverside, NJ/Riverside) was in double figures with 13 points. Forward Jared Meredith (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Burlington County Tech) and forward Alex Risl in (so. Union, NJ/Union) each contributed with nine points.
In the first half, Rutgers-Camden had a jumper by Meredith that tied the score (4-4) at 17:20. Rowan had nine straight points to lead 13-4 with 14:58 remaining. The Profs were ahead by 11 points (21-10) when Byrnes nailed a three-pointer at 11:38. Rutgers-Camden pulled within five points (21-16) at 9:35 when guard Mark McCloskey (so. Rowan a 10 point advantage (26-16) with 7:58 left. Canty’s three-pointer cut the deficit to five (26-21) at 6:58.
The Profs were up by 10 (38-28) after guard Dan Reddan’s (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) layup with 1:41 on the clock. Canty followed with a three (1:06) and Meredith had a layup (0:52) to trail 38-33 at the intermission. Darby ended the half with 15 points and Byrnes had 11. Canty led the Scarlet Raptors with 11 points.
Rowan started the final period with nine unanswered points in 3:22 to lead 47-33. Guard Michael Farrow (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) and Reevey had two baskets apiece and Byrnes added one. McCloskey made a layup at 12:55 and Rutgers-Camden trailed by 13 points (56-43). Rowan was on top by 27 points (74-47) at 6:23 after eight straight points. Guard Dan Cappelluti’s (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) jumper gave the Profs a 29 point advantage
(82-53) with 2:18 remaining.
Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, February 20 for an 8 p.m. conference game. Rutgers-Camden’s next game is at home on Saturday, February 23 against The College of New Jersey at 3 p.m.
