William Paterson Wins 48-45 Over Rowan

WAYNE, NJ – The William Paterson University men’s basketball team won 48-45 over visiting Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

With 18 seconds left in the game, Rowan forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) hit a jumper that tied the score at 45. William Paterson guard Courtney Nelson (sr. Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) made the first of two free throws at the seven second mark and forward Jordan Fowler (sr. East Orange, NJ/Montclair) added two foul shots with two seconds remaining to seal the win.

The Pioneers were led by guard Manny Perrotte (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) with 12 points. Guard Bobby Dunn (jr. Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) totaled 10 rebounds. Guard Gabriel Paul (so. Hillside, NJ/Hillside) contributed with eight points and eight rebounds. Nelson had eight points. William Paterson is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Rowan drops to 3-5 on the season with a 1-1 NJAC mark.

Hartnett led all scorers with 21 points. He was seven for 14 from the floor and seven for nine from the line. In addition, Hartnett grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Guard Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) chipped in with eight points and six boards. Guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added seven points.

The second half started with the Profs trailing by three points (17-14). Hartnett scored eight straight points in 1:55 that made the score 22-17. Rowan led by 10 points (31-21) after Hartnett’s layup at 10:40. William Paterson was down by nine points (33-24) after two foul shots by Hartnett with 10:07 left. The Pioneers came back with a 15-6 run in a seven minute span that tied the score at 39. Perrotte and Nelson had seven and five points respectively. Care gave Rowan the lead back (41-39) at 2:48. Paul’s layup made the score 43-41 (1:55) then Hartnett nailed two free throws to tie the score (1:33). Nelson had a layup with 40 seconds remaining for a 45-43 advantage before Hartnett’s jumper tied the score.

The game was tied four times in the first half. The last one was at eight after a layup by Hartnett. Then there were three lead changes before the Pioneers held on for the rest of the period. Reddan’s jumper put Rowan ahead 14-11 at 6:16. Paul had a tip-in (5:11), forward Chris Brown (jr. Newark, NJ/Newark Science) followed with a layup (4:09) and guard Joe Ellis (jr. Newark, NJ/Newark Science) had a jumper (1:54) for a three-point advantage (17-14) at the intermission.

Next, Rowan is at home on Wednesday, December 10 against Widener University at 8 p.m.
