CHESTER, PA – The Widener University women’s basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 68-55 on Friday.
Guard Barbara Fleming led the Pride with a game-high 21 points. Fleming also had five rebounds, five steals and three assists. Guard Beth Dessart Mager contributed with 16 points. Center Casey Pritz added nine points and seven rebounds. Guard Lindsey Isler dished five assists.
Widener has a record of 7-3 while Rowan is 6-4 overall. For the Profs, guard Gina Catanzariti (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored 15 points. Forward Jessica Nimbley (jr. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) totaled 13 points and eight rebounds. Forward Ashley Cieplicki (sr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) chipped in with 11 points. Guard Brynn DeGroff (sr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) grabbed seven boards.
The score was tied at five at 16:20 in the first half. Widener went up by 11 points (20-9) after a 15-4 run in a four minute span. Fleming made nine points and Dessart Mager hit two three-pointers. Nimbley’s jumper at 10:44 made the score 20-11. The Pride pulled away with an 18-2 surge for a 25 point advantage (38-13) with 4:01 remaining. Widener was ahead 45-20 at the intermission. Fleming ended the period with 16 points and Dessart Mager had 14.
In the second half, Rowan trailed by 18 points (55-37) after Catanzariti’s three at 8:33. Widener led by 22 points (59-37) at 7:30 and (66-44) at 2:15. The Profs had a run of nine straight points and trailed by 13 (66-53) with 31 seconds left. Cieplicki scored three points while Nimbley, Catanzariti and DeGroff each had basket.
Rowan is back in action after the holidays at home against Penn State Brandywine on Monday, January 5 at 8 p.m.
