Rowan Suffers 129-113 Loss at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

KINGS POINT, NY – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men’s swimming and diving team won 129-113 over Rowan University on Saturday.

The Mariners are undefeated with a 3-0 record while the Profs are 4-2 overall. Rowan took first place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.29) with Steve Tucker (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart), Sean Downey (jr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), Kevin Wallace (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Lenape) and Josh Spivey (fr. Maraget, NJ/Atlantic City). The 200 free relay came in second with a time of 1:39.65. The relay team included Matt Marzolf (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Dan Bower (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Wallace and Spivey.

In the individual events, Wallace won the 100 butterfly in 51.89. Jake Taylor (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) swam a winning time of 1:02.62 in the 100 breaststroke. Jeff Terrell (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.)came in second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.70) and third in the 500 free (5:03.57).

Bryan Carlisle (sr. Somer Points, NJ/Mainland Reg.) won both diving events. Carlisle totaled 498.45 points in the one meter and he had 542.03 points on the three meter board. Mark Balesteri (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) took third in the one (364.05) and three (390.00) meter diving.

Jeremy Soto (jr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:02.10). Marzolf was second in the 100 backstroke (57.85) followed by Soto third (58.20). Spivey had a second place in the 200 freestyle (1:48.91). In the 100 butterfly, Brian McDermott (so. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and Tucker were third (54.26) and fourth (55.59) respectively. Matt Bocian (jr. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) came in third in the 50 free (22.78) followed by Bower fourth (23.05). Bocian took fourth in the 100 freestyle (50.45) and Bower had a fourth place in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.35). Michael Brooks (so. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) finished fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:04.80).

The Rowan swim teams will travel to Fort Lauderdale, FL after the holidays for training from Friday, January 2 to Friday, January 9 at the Hall of Fame Pool.
