Berkeley Defeats Penn State Brandywine, 55-44 in consolation game of Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Berkeley College men’s basketball team defeated Penn State Brandywine, 55-44 in the consolation game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Saturday. The tournament was held at Rowan University.

It was the first win of the season for Berkeley. The Bulldogs have a 1-8 record while the Lions are 2-7 on the season. In the first round on Friday, Valley Forge Christian College had a 71-66 victory over Penn State Brandywine. Rowan won 99-45 against Berkeley.

Guard Richard Webb led Berkeley with 15 points and forward Donovan Black followed with 14. Black also grabbed eight rebounds. Forward Savereo Jackson pulled down a game-high 10 boards. Guard Derron Chaplin chipped in with eight points.

For Penn State Brandywine, guard Marvin Dukes scored 13 points. Guard Nagbae Saylee and forward Dave Segura contributed with nine and eight points respectively. Guard Kyle Haggerty added seven points. Saylee also had six rebounds.

In the first half, the score was tied at six after Haggerty’s three-pointer at 15:27. The Bulldogs had a seven point lead (15-8) after a 9-2 run with 11:01 remaining. Webb’s three-pointer put Berkeley ahead 27-13 at 5:32. With 2:45 left, Black made a layup for a 12 point advantage (29-17). The Lions pulled with nine points (31-22) at the intermission. Saylee hit a jumper (1:08) and made one free throw (:40).

Berkeley held onto the lead the entire second period. Guard TJ Hazinsky cut the deficit to two points (33-31) with a layup at 14:07. Black sank two foul shots at 7:43 to go back up by seven points (43-36). Dukes’ three-pointer pulled the Lions within five points (45-40) with 5:36 left. The Bulldogs nailed six straight free throws in a minute span to lead 51-42. Webb’s jumper made the score 53-42 at 1:42. Dukes had the team’s final basket with 1:06 left on the clock. Black (:51) and Chaplin (:29) each made a foul shot to end the scoring.
