GLASSBORO, NJ – Guard Charles Jones scored a game-high 20 points to lead Widener University to a 73-60 victory over Rowan University in a nonconference game on Wednesday night.

The Pride improve to 6-3, while the Profs have a 3-6 record. Jones (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Millersville University) was eight for 15 from the floor and two for two from the foul line. Forward Matt Sosna (sr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Forward Jamarr Johnson (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) contributed with eight points.

For Rowan, forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) recorded 17 points and nine rebounds. Guard Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) followed with 12 points. Forward Kevin Darby (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) and guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) scored 10 points apiece.

The score was tied four times in the first half, with the final one coming at 8:34 (20-20). Rowan went ahead by one (22-21) on a layup by Care at 6:31. Widener closed out the period with a 13-2 run to lead 34-24 at the intermission. Sosna had five points, while forward Jack Brennan (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) scored four. In the first period, Sosna posted eight points and four rebounds. Hartnett had 12 points and four boards for the Profs.

In the second, Jones’ three-pointer at 16:36 put the Pride up by 16 (44-28). Widener’s biggest advantage of 18 points (52-34) came at 14:06 after a layup by guard Bobby Edmunds (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.). Rowan cut the deficit to eight points (66-58) following a free throw by guard Sean Hughes (so. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) with 4:29 remaining. Edmunds two foul shots with 39 seconds left sealed the win.

Rowan hosts the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday-Saturday, December 6-7. On Friday, Penn State Brandywine takes on Valley Forge Christian College at 6 p.m., followed by Berkeley College against Rowan at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the consolation game is at 1 p.m. and the championship is at 3 p.m.
