Alvernia Hangs On for a 66-64 Win Over Rowan

READING, PA – The Alvernia University men’s basketball team held on for a 66-64 victory over Rowan University in a nonconference game on Monday night.

Alvernia was ahead 65-59 with 21 seconds left in the game. Guard Kevin Darby (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) hit a jumper with 19 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to four points. Guard Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) followed with a three-pointer at the seven second mark. Guard Eric Barefield (so. Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) made the first of two fouls shots with two seconds on the clock to end the scoring.

Guard David Washington (sr. Durham, NC/Northern Durham) led the Crusaders with 17 points. Center Nick Rivera (jr. Reading, PA/Holy Name) and guard Charlie Hughes (jr. Kenhorst, PA/Governor Mifflin) each contributed with 11 points. Forward Tyrone Bradley (sr. Chester, PA/Chester) and Rivera grabbed eight rebounds apiece. Barefield totaled nine assists and four steals.

The Crusaders improve to 2-3 on the season while the Profs have a 2-4 record. Darby ended the game with 14 points and Reddan scored 12. Reddan also had five assists and two steals.

Rowan trailed by two points (30-28) after the first half. Guard Allen Pritchett (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) recorded a three as time expired for the Profs from three-quarters of the court. The score was tied eight times in the second period. The last one was at 49 when Washington made a layup. Alvernia added six more points to lead 55-49 at 5:17. Rowan answered with a seven point surge to go up by two points (57-55) at 2:53. Reddan nailed two threes and guard Aaron Spellman (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) had a jumper. Washington put the Crusaders ahead with a three-pointer (58-57) at 2:29 and they never trailed for the remainder of the contest. Reddan scored 12 points in the second half while Washington had 11.

Darby had the first basket (19:23) of the game and Rivera tied the score (18:43) with a layup. Washington’s three (17:54) gave Alvernia the lead that it held for the remainder of the first half. The Crusaders led by 10 points (23-13) with 10:41 on the clock. The Profs had four straight baskets to pull within two points (23-21) at 5:03. Forward Tim Cook (jr. Willingboro, NJ/Glassboro) made two layups in the run. At the three second mark, Hughes hit a three-pointer that made the score 30-25 before Pritchett’s three.

Rowan starts its conference schedule at home on Wednesday, December 3 against Rutgers-Camden at 8 p.m.
