POMONA, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship with a 2-0 victory over Richard Stockton College on Saturday afternoon.
It is Rowan’s first conference title since the program was started in 1995. The Profs, 15-0-2, receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Pairings will be announced on Monday, November 10 at noon.
Both of the Profs’ goals came in the second half. Forward Mandy Silvesti (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) scored the first one at 67:47 with an assist from forward Michelle Carrocino (so. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and midfielder Veronica Rhea (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI). Rhea had a free kick that Carrocino headed and Silvesti knocked the ball into the Ospreys’ net.
Carrocino scored at 82:26 on a breakaway. It was her 17th goal on the season. Rowan out shot Richard Stockton, 17-5. Goalie Sarah Volkomer (jr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) had one save for her ninth shutout. For Stockton, Alex Rogers (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) stopped six shots.
Rowan has an overall record of 15-0-2 while Richard Stockton is 18-3-1 on the season. In this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America Rankings, the Profs were 14th in the nation and the Ospreys were 23rd.
In the conference tournament. Rowan received a bye in the first round as the second seed. The women’s soccer team defeated the third seed The College of New Jersey, 2-1 in the semifinals. The top seed Richard Stockton College had a first round bye and a 3-1 win over number four Montclair State University in the semifinals.
