GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team had a 2-1 victory over The College of New Jersey in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Wednesday.

Rowan (14-0-2), the second seed, advances to the final at the top seed Richard Stockton College on Saturday, November 8 at 1 p.m. In the other semifinal game, Richard Stockton defeated the fourth seed Montclair State University, 3-1. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

This was Rowan’s first win over TCNJ since the series started in 1996. The Profs and Lions played to a scoreless tie in 2002 and they had a 1-1 tie after two overtimes earlier this season. TCNJ ends the regular season with a 12-6-1 record. Rowan also broke the school mark for most consecutive games without a loss (15 in 2006).

Profs’ forward Jess Babice (so. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) dribbled in front of the Lions’ goal and fired a shot into the upper right hand corner to give Rowan a 2-0 lead with 2:48 left to play. Earlier today, she was named the NJAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year and to the All-Conference first team. Forward Jamie Kunkel (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) knocked in a cross from back Jillian Casey (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) with 22 seconds remaining, but the Profs held on for the victory. Kunkel was a NJAC All-Conference first team selection. In the first period, Profs’ midfielder Veronica Rhea (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) kicked in a serve by midfielder Nina Fragoso (fr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) at 26:05 to put Rowan ahead 1-0 at the intermission.

Rowan took 13 shots, while TCNJ had 11. Goalie Sarah Volkomer (jr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) made nine saves in the Profs’ net. She was chosen the NJAC Goalkeeper of the Year and received All-Conference first team honors. Goalkeeper Jessica Clarke (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) stopped four shots for the Lions.
