GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s volleyball team defeated New Jersey City University, 3-0 in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Tuesday night. The set scores were 25-21, 25-17 and 25-23.
Rowan (16-17), the fourth seed, moves on to play at top seeded Richard Stockton College in the semifinals on Thursday, November 6 at 7 p.m. In the other first round match, the third seed Ramapo College beat the sixth seed William Paterson University, 3-1. Ramapo travels to second seeded Montclair State University in the other semifinal match on Thursday. The final is on Saturday, November 8 at the higher seed. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. New Jersey City finishes the season with a 14-11 record.
The Profs were led by middle blocker Chelsea Bowman (jr. Penns Grove, NJ/Salem County Christian Academy) with 14 kills. She had a .414 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Alexis Louie (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) followed with 13 kills and eight digs. Outside hitter Karen Ramirez (jr. Bogota, NJ/Bogota) totaled 21 digs and two service aces. Middle blocker Theresa Pecoraro (sr. Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) recorded nine kills, while libero Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) registered 13 digs. Setter Chrissy McKay (jr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) compiled 34 assists and 12 digs.
Gothic Knights’ middle blocker Sarah Torres (sr. Elizabeth, NJ/Science) tallied 14 kills and had a .429 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Jacqueline LeBlanc (sr. Westfield, NJ/Westfield) contributed with eight kills and nine digs. Middle blocker Jennifer Hatch (jr. Paterson, NJ/Mary Help of Christians Academy) and outside hitter Jennifer Carvalho (sr. Rahway, NJ/Rahway) added six kills apiece. Carvalho also had nine digs. Setter Alex Johanesen (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) dished 32 assists.
