Rowan Wins 73-70 in overtime against Gwynedd-Mercy

GLASSBORO, NJ – Guard Billy Care hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left to give Rowan University a 73-70 win in overtime against Gwynedd-Mercy College in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.

In the second half, forward Jon Hogga (so. Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) made the first of two foul shots to tie the score at 61 (1:36) for the Griffins and send the game into overtime. Guard Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had a layup (3:30) and a free throw (3:15) that gave Rowan a four point advantage (67-63). Guard Matt Johnson (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Strawberry Mansion) cut the lead to two points (67-65) with a basket at 2:34.

Forward Gary Foster’s layup (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) at the two minute mark and Reddan’s foul shot put the Profs up 70-65 with 1:43 left. Hogga nailed a three (1:33) and forward Haven Wroten (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter) had a layup (0:55) that tied the score at 70. Care’s winning shot came on a pass from Reddan.

Care ended the game with 23 points which tied his career high. Forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) contributed with 14 points and Reddan added 12. Foster contributed with 10 points. Reddan and forward Kevin Darby (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) totaled seven and six rebounds respectively.

The Profs improve to 2-3 on the season while the Griffins have a 2-1 record. For Gwynedd-Mercy, Hogga compiled 19 points and 10 boards. Johnson chipped in with 15 points, five steals and four rebounds. Wroten pulled down seven rebounds.

The score was tied four times in the first half. The last one was at 26 after Hogga’s jumper with 6:10 remaining. The Profs trailed by one (30-29) at 4:14 then they had five straight points to lead 35-29 at 2:04. Hogga made two free throws to pull within four points (35-31) to end the period.

Rowan held on to the lead in the second half until there was 2:28 left. Hogga made two foul shots, the first tied the score at 59 and the second put the Griffins up by one (60-59). Care followed with a jumper (1:55) then Hogga had the tying free throw (1:36).

Next, Rowan is on the road at Alvernia University on Monday, December 1 at 7 p.m.
