WASHINGTON, PA – Washington & Jefferson College defeated Rowan University, 81-65 in the championship game of the Holiday Inn Classic Tournament on Saturday.
Washington & Jefferson improves to 2-0, while Rowan has a 1-2 record. Earlier on Saturday, Otterbein College topped Kenyon College, 67-54 in the consolation game. On Friday, Washington & Jefferson had a 67-44 win over Kenyon, while Rowan beat Otterbein, 65-61.
The Presidents were led by forward Maggie Gibson (jr. Greensburg, PA/Greensburg C.C.) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Forward Emily Hays (sr. Youngstown, OH/Boardman) added 15 points and six boards. Guards Stephanie Smith (jr. Grove City, OH/Grove City) and Kennan Killeen (jr. Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) both scored eight points.
For the Profs, forward Jessica Nimbley (jr. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) totaled 18 points and eight rebounds. Nimbley was named to the All-Tournament team. Guard Alissa Lamey (fr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with 14 points. Guard Brynn DeGroff (sr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) recorded seven points.
Washington & Jefferson led by six points (12-6) at 14:05 in the first period. The Presidents scored the next nine points to go ahead 21-6 with 9:54 on the clock. Guard Catlyn Kriston (so. Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) had four of the nine points. Guard Lindsey Hyre’s (sr. Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) three-pointer at 8:42 put the Presidents up 24-8. The Profs fought back with a 10-0 surge to trail by six (24-18) with 5:40 left in the half. Center Kelly Lallave (so. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) scored five points, Nimbley had three and guard Nancy White (fr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) added two. Smith nailed a three-pointer with 26 seconds left to make the score 34-22 at the intermission. Gibson and Hays ended the half with eight and seven points respectively. Nimbley, Lamey and Lallave each had five points for the Profs.
In the second, Rowan forward Ashley Cieplicki’s (sr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) layup at 16:47 brought the Profs within six (36-30). The Presidents led 41-34 with 15:06 left to play. Washington & Jefferson had a 10-2 stretch to increase its advantage to 15 points (51-36). Killeen scored four points and Gibson and Smith both had three. The Presidents pushed the lead to 25 points (68-43) over the next 6:10. The closest Rowan came the rest of the way was 13 points (77-64) with 59 seconds remaining in the game.
