GETTYSBURG, PA – The SUNY Geneseo men’s basketball team won 62-55 over Rowan University in the opening round of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening.
Rowan (0-3) will play Elizabethtown College (2-1) in the consolation game on Saturday at 2 p.m. Host Gettysburg College meets Geneseo in the championship at 4 p.m. In the first game, Gettysburg defeated Elizabehtown, 71-56.
The Knights (2-0) were led by guard Scott Morton (sr. Syracuse, NJ/Westhill) with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Kyle Stevens (jr. Saratoga Springs, NY/Spa Catholic) contributed with 10 points and nine boards. Forward Jeff Howe (sr. Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) added nine points and six rebounds.
For the Profs, forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) totaled 18 points and six rebounds. Guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) followed with 16 points and six rebounds. Guard Kevin Darby (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) grabbed seven rebounds.
There were three ties in the first half with the last one at 13 with 8:50 remaining. Forward Steve Secula (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) made two foul shots that tied the score for Rowan. The Profs then had an 11-3 run to lead by eight points (24-16) at 5:19. Hartnett had six points in the surge. With 1:42 left, Morton’s layup pulled the Knights within two points (28-26). Care followed with two free throws at 1:25. Morton answered with a layup (1:04) and a three-pointer (:15) to lead by one (31-30) at the intermission.
The Profs tied the score at 37 in the final half at 18:00 after a three-point play by Hartnett. Howe put Geneseo back up by two with a layup at 17:06. The Knights never trailed for the remainder of the game. Steven’s three made the score 45-37 at 13:24. The Profs pulled within two points (49-47) after three straight foul shots by guard Aaron Spellman (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) with 4:59 left. It was the closest Rowan came for the rest of the game. In the final 1:18, the Knights were seven for 10 from the free throw line.
