Messiah Defeats Rowan, 2-1 in Two Overtimes

GRANTHAM, PA – Messiah College midfielder Elizabeth Ziegler scored the winning goal in the second overtime for 2-1 victory over Rowan University in the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Messiah (17-1) advances to the national semifinals and will play Tufts University on Saturday, November 22. In the other semifinal game, Bowdoin College meets Ursinus College. The final is scheduled for Sunday, November 23. Ursinus College is hosting the semifinals and final of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

The Profs end the season with a 15-5 record. In the second round on Saturday, Rowan came from behind to defeat Trinity College (CT), 5-4 in overtime. Messiah had a 3-0 shutout over Eastern University. Both teams received a bye in the first round.

Ziegler (jr. Myerstown, PA/Eastern Lebanon County) dribbled into the circle and blasted a shot from the top for the game-winner with 33 seconds left in the second overtime. Midfielder Jenna Max (jr. Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) recorded the tying goal for the Falcons. Max scored at the 60 minute mark on a pass from forward Nikki Bailey (sr. Elliottsburg, PA/West Perry).

The Profs had a 1-0 advantage after a goal by forward Lauren Ross (so. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) at 47:04. Back Jen Lipnickey (sr. Chester, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) had the assist.

Rowan totaled 20 shots and Messiah took 18. Prof goalie Lisa Apt (fr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made eight saves. For the Falcons, goalie Ashley Mowery (jr. Mechanicsburg, PA/Northern) stopped 15 shots.

This was Rowan’s 16th appearance and fourth straight in the NCAA Championship Tournament.
Messiah is in the national tournament for the 22nd time and eighth straight. The Falcons have finished second six times (2006, 2005, 2002, 2001, 1995, 1984) and they were third five times.
