GLENSIDE, PA – Arcadia University defeated Rowan University, 94-90 in three overtimes in a nonconference game on Saturday. It was the season opener for both teams.
In the third overtime, Arcadia went ahead by three points (88-85) following a jumper by guard Damien Palantino (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) at 2:57. Rowan guard Sean Hughes (so. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) sunk two free throws to cut the lead to one (88-87) with 1:29 left to play. Knights’ guard Terrell Varnado (sr. Forest Hills, MD/Archbishop Curly) made two foul shots (1:10) and Profs’ guard Aaron Spellman (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) nailed a three-pointer (:37) to tie the game (90-90). Palantino had a jump shot (:32) and guard Khalief Trawick (fr. Philadelphia, PA) added a layup (:22) to seal the victory.
The Knights were led by Palantino with 29 points and five assists. He was nine of 17 from the field and seven for 10 from the free throw line. Guard Blaise Pepitone (sr. Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) added 21 points. Forward Bobby Mulholland (sr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) contributed with 11 points and five steals. Varnado collected 10 rebounds and scored eight points.
For the Profs, guard Kevin Darby (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed six boards. Forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) posted 15 points and six rebounds. Guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added 11 points, while guards Allen Pritchett (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) and Hughes each had nine. Hughes also pulled down eight rebounds.
Rowan started the game with a 15-6 run over the first 9:05. Darby scored seven of Rowan’s 15 points. Arcadia came back with a 16-2 surge to go ahead 22-17 at 5:14. Varnado had four points, while Palantino, Pepitone and Mulholland all hit a three-pointer. Mulholland nailed two free throws with no time on the clock to give the Knights a 36-28 halftime advantage.
In the second period, Arcadia forward Darrell Mills (so. Philadelphia, PA/Engineering & Sciences) made a layup at 17:14 to go up 44-30. Rowan guard Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had a layup and a foul shot at 14:10 to make the score 47-38. Hughes nailed a three-pointer (9:08) and Darby followed with a layup (6:50) to cut the deficit to three (56-53). Arcadia increased the lead to six points (63-57) at 4:58. The Profs fought back and came within two (63-61) after a jumper by Hughes. Darby’s foul shot with two seconds left sent the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, Palatino converted two free throws at 2:08 to put Arcadia ahead 72-68. Darby had two free throws at 1:58 to bring Rowan within two (72-70). Palantino made a foul shot (1:35) and Darby countered with a three-pointer (1:22) to tie the game (73-73). The teams exchanged free throws to force a second overtime. The score was tied four times in the second overtime.
