Rowan Sweeps William Paterson in Season Opener

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2008-09 season with victories over conference opponent William Paterson University on Saturday. The Rowan men won 166-76 while the women had a score of 155-87.

The Prof men and women both were winners in the 200 freestyle relays. The men swam a time of 1:30.30 with the team of Steve Tucker (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart), Ryan McNally (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown), Kevin Wallace (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Lenape) and Josh Spivey (fr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City). The women’s relay was first in 1:45.49 with Janina Wojcik (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.), Samantha Edwards (so. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Kate Winters (so. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) and Alicia Mackleer (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest).

Rowan took first through fourth place in the women’s 50 freestyle. Julianne Furdyna (so. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was the winner (27.75) followed by Michelle Dunn (fr. Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) second (28:18), Megan Montagna (fr. Madison, NJ/Madison) third (28.79) and Caroline Lewis (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) fourth (28.96). In the 1,000 freestyle, Edwards was first (11:29.38) followed by Ashley Gagnon (jr. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) second (11:38.14). Winters finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:03.36) and Mackleer came in third (2:10.06). In the 500 free, Winters had another first place (5:33.54) and Becky Goldberg (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) was second (5:48.98).

Sarah Peay (fr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and Goldberg were second (2:29.36) and third (2:29.46) respectively in the 200 individual medley. Peay won the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.52. Heather Sickler (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) took second in the 100 free (1:00.80) and Lewis was third (1:05.24). Stacey Rather (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.22) and Samantha King (jr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) took third (1:13.48). Wojcik swam a winning time of 1:03.16 in the 100 butterfly while Anne O’Gorman (so. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) took second (1:04.55) and Dunn was third (1:07.17). Mackleer finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:06.37) and Steph McAllister (jr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was third (1:06.42).

In diving, Bryan Carlisle (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) won the one and three meter diving for Rowan. Carlisle totaled 286.35 points on the one meter board and 312.82 in the three meter. Mark Balesteri (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) had second places in the one (221.32) and three (240.82) meter diving. Zach Castelli (fr. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) finished third in both events. He had 216.52 points in the one meter and 210.73 in the three meter. For the women, Rowan’s Samantha Rottkamp (so. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) took first place in the one (154.65) and three (201.30) meter diving.

For the Profs, Mike Brooks (so. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) was the winner in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:41.63. Bill Malone (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.07 and Jeremy Soto (jr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) was third (1:50.47). In the 50 freestyle, Kyle Mongelluzzo (jr. Newfield, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Jake Taylor (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) finished first (23.20) and second (23.24) respectively. Jeff Terrell (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) came in second in the 200 individual medley (2:07.95) followed by Dan Bower (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) third (2:11.31) and Brian McDermott (so. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) fourth (2:11.68). Taylor and Bower were first (1:04.11) and second (1:04.64) respectively in the 100 breaststroke.

Rowan took first, second and third place in the men’s 100 butterfly. Wallace was the winner in 53:40 followed by Soto second (54.88) and Tucker third (56.03). Paul Lindinger (fr. Millville, NJ/Archbishop Ryan (PA)) had a first place in the 100 freestyle (53.25) while Sean McCarthy (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Justin Loutfy (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) were second (54.53) and third (56.75) respectively. Matt Marzolf (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) took first in the 100 backstroke (57.75).

William Paterson took first place in the women’s and men’s 200 medley relays. The women swam a time of 1:55.37 and the men won in 1:41.42. Brett Kuchin (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) had a first place for the Pioneers in the women’s 200 individual medley (2:26.31). She also took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.07). Kirk Smith (jr. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) won the men’s 200 individual medley (2:07.03). Grace McKay (sr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) had a first place in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.52. It was also the first meet of the season for William Paterson.

Next week, Rowan travels to Salisbury University on Tuesday, October 28 for a 6 p.m. meet.
