NJCU Tops Rowan, 2-1

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The New Jersey City University men’s soccer team won 2-1 over conference opponent Rowan University on Saturday afternoon.

Midfielder John Bernal (jr. Totowa, NJ/Inern (Medellin, Colombia)) scored the winning goal. Bernal knocked in a rebound off the crossbar and back Gonzalo Dapia (sr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had the assist.

The Gothic Knights are 10-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Profs have a 6-8-3 record with a 1-5-1 NJAC mark.

Rowan went up 1-0 at 2:40 after an own goal. NJCU tied the score with a goal by forward Cristhian Acuna (sr. East Newark, NJ/Harrison) at 25:52. Midfielder Eduardo Tejada (so. North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) picked up the assist.

NJCU totaled 14 shots while Rowan had 10. Goalie Andre Viola (so. Clifton, NJ/St. Joseph’s Reg. (Montvale) had one save for the Gothic Knights. In the Profs’ net, goalie Charlie Cunliffe (so. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) made seven saves.

Next week, Rowan hosts New York University on Wednesday, October 22 at 7 p.m.
