WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team shut out William Paterson University, 3-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.
Rowan, ranked 15th in the nation, is 9-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the conference. It was the first loss of the season for the Pioneers. William Paterson has a 9-1-1 record with a 3-1-1 NJAC mark.
All three of the Profs’ goals came in the second half. Midfielder Nina Fragoso (fr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) started the scoring at 48:32 with an assist from midfielder Veronica Rhea (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI). Rhea blasted a shot to the upper right corner of the Pioneers’ net for the second goal at 59:12. Forward Jess Babice (so. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) had the assist. With 10:10 remaining, midfielder Krista Verzi (jr. Delan, NJ/Delran) scored on a free kick.
Rowan ended the game with seven shots while William Paterson took six. Goalie Sarah Volkomer (jr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) made one save for her fourth shutout of the season. For the Pioneers, goalkeeper Meaghan Baker (jr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) stopped two shots.
Rowan travels to Kean University on Wednesday, October 15 for a 7:30 p.m. conference game.
