UNION, NJ – Three players scored in double figures to lead Rowan University over host Kean University, 71-63 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
Forward Matt Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) led the Profs with 21 points and six rebounds. Guard Michael Farrow (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) contributed with 17 points off the bench and guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) added 10. Forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) grabbed six boards.
Rowan is 13-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Kean drops to 6-13 overall and 1-6 in the NJAC. For the Cougars, Lamar Wright (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) totaled 23 points and seven rebounds. Guard Keith Williams (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) and forward Jonathan Jones (fr. Linden, NJ/Linden) added 18 and 10 points respectively. They both pulled down six rebounds.
In the first half, the score was tied five times before Rowan took the lead for the remainder of the period. Farrow’s free throw put the Profs up by two points (23-21) with 4:32 left. Jones had a layup that tied the score at 4:11 for the fifth time. Forward Rahim Shiver (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) followed with a jumper that gave Rowan the lead (25-23) at 4:03. Farrow nailed a three (3:21) and Byrnes made a layup (2:57) for a seven point advantage (30-23). Byrnes’ three-pointer put Rowan ahead 35-27 at the intermission. Both Brynes and Farrow compiled 11 first half points. Wright led the Cougars with 10 points.
Kean came back in the second half to lead by three points (41-38) at 15:06 after Wright had a basket. Farrow put the Profs back on top (44-41) with two free throws (14:46), a layup (14:26) and a tip-in (14:19). Darby and Byrnes followed with a basket apiece to lead 48-41 at 12:22. The Cougars fought back and trailed by three (60-57) with 3:06 remaining. The Profs’ final 11 points came on free throws and they were 11 for 12 at the line. Byrnes contributed with six foul shots in six attempts. He finished the half with 10 points.
Rowan is back at home against William Paterson University on Saturday, February 2 at 1 p.m.
