Ramapo Beats Rowan at the Buzzer, 101-98 in Double Overtime

GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Tim Wesley hit a three-pointer as time expired in the second overtime period to give Ramapo College a 101-98 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

The game was tied at 86 heading into the second overtime. Rowan went ahead by four points (90-86) following a jumper by forward Matt Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) (4:30) and two free throws by guard Aaron Spellman (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) (4:01). Wesley (jr. Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) sank two foul shots to tie the game at 92 with 2:18 remaining. Guard Andre Kenny (so. Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) made a jump shot with 43 seconds left to put the Roadrunners ahead by three (97-94). After the two teams exchanged free throws to make the score 98-95, Byrnes nailed a three-pointer with four seconds to play that tied the game at 98. Ramapo raced down the court and Wesley banked in a three-pointer from 25 feet away to give the Roadrunners the victory.

Ramapo improves to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Rowan has a 12-5 record and a 2-4 NJAC mark. Guard Ahmad Hassan (fr. Edgewater, NJ/Leonia) led the Roadrunners with 27 points and three steals. Wesley finished with 22 points, while forward Assad Shaakir (sr. Newark, NJ/St. Patrick’s) contributed with 15 points and seven rebounds. Kenny and guard Desmond Sanders (jr. Newark, NJ/St. Patrick’s) added 14 and 10 points respectively. Sander also dished seven assists.

For Rowan, Byrnes totaled 32 points and six boards. Guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) had a career-high 23 points and seven rebounds. Guard Michael Farrow (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) chipped in with 18 points off the bench. Spellman was also in double figures with 12 points. Forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) posted eight points and eight rebounds.

After regulation the game with tied at 75. Wesley’s jumper with 2:06 remaining in the first overtime period knotted the score at 82. Shaakir made two foul shots to give the Roadrunners a two point advantage (84-82) at 1:39. Byrnes tied the game at 84 with a jumper at 1:25. Wesley’s basket at 00:59 put Ramapo back ahead by two (86-84). Byrnes sent the game into double overtime when he made a jump shot with 44 seconds left.

Ramapo led 34-28 at the intermission. In the second period, Darby’s layup at 17:52 brought the Profs within two points (36-34). Ramapo scored the next seven points to go up 43-34 (15:39). Hassan had five points, while Wesley added two. Rowan came right back with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to one (45-44) at 13:43. Darby and Reevey each scored four points and Byrnes had two. Byrnes’ three-pointer at 12:04 gave the Profs a one point lead (49-48). At 11:17, the score was tied at 51. A three-pointer by Hassan (11:06) and a layup by guard Jason Marshall (sr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) gave the Roadrunners a five point lead (56-51). Ramapo was ahead 72-64 following two free throws by Sanders at 3:58. Rowan scored three straight baskets to trail by two (72-70) with 2:26 remaining. Farrow’s foul shot with 36 seconds left brought Rowan within two (75-73). Reevey tipped in a missed shot with two seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime. Hassan scored 16 points in the second half for Ramapo. Byrnes and Farrow had 15 and 10 points respectively for Rowan.

In the first half, Ramapo started the game with a 17-5 surge over the first 5:08. Hassan had 11 of the 17 points. Wesley’s layup at 11:08 gave Ramapo a 16 point advantage (25-9). The Roadrunners’ largest lead was 17 points (30-13) following a three-pointer by Wesley at 8:12. Rowan closed out the period with a 15-4 stretch. Darby scored eight points, Farrow added four and Byrnes made a three. Darby recorded 13 points in the first half and Hassan had 11 for the Roadrunners.

Rowan travels to Kean University for a NJAC game on Wednesday, January 30 at 8 p.m.
