GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon. The Rowan men won 143-98, while the women finished with a 133-98 victory.
The Rowan men improve to 6-3 on the season, while the women have a 5-4 mark. The Montclair State men are 5-6 overall and the women have a 4-6 mark.
Rowan finished first in the men’s 200 medley (1:39.38) and 200 freestyle (1:30.97) relays. The medley relay team consisted of Jeremy Soto (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly), Kevin Baker (sr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), David Shinton (sr. Newark, DE/Newark) and Kevin Ovalle (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson). Stephen Tucker (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart), Kyle Mongelluzzo (so. Newfield, NJ/Delsea Reg.), Dan Kelley (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) and Jim Smith (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) swam on the free relay.
The men had victories in seven individual events, including two first place finishes for Soto. He won the 200 (1:48.89) and 500 (5:00.18) freestyles. Kelley took first in the 1000 freestyle (10:15.99). He was also second in the 100 butterfly (55.05). James Sheerin (sr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) placed first in the 100 butterfly (54.93) and he was third in the 200 freestyle (1:50.70). Andrew Williams (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) swam a winning time of 22.25 in the 50 freestyle and was second in the 500 freestyle (5:06.82). Ovalle took first place in the 100 freestyle (50.24) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.94).
Baker came in first in the 200 individual medley (2:00.80) followed by Brian McDermott (fr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) second (2:08.15), Shinton third (2:08.39) and Matt Bocian (so. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) fourth (2:18.27). McDermott also finished second in the 100 backstroke (57.58). Shinton was third in 500 freestyle (5:08.98). Michael Brooks (fr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) placed second in the 1000 freestyle (10:32.37), while Smith was second in the 50 free (22.31). Tucker grabbed third places in the 50 freestyle (22.61) and 100 butterfly (56.62). Sean Downey (so. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) took third in 100 freestyle (51.82) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.55) events. Smith came in third in the 100 backstroke (57.66).
For the MSU men, John Adams (jr. Wharton, NJ/Pope John XXIII) won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.80. Ricky Miller (sr. Seaside Park, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.04). Blaise Lacca (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) took second in the 100 free (50.30). The Red Hawk women were led by Galina Loutchouk (fr. Richboro, PA/Council Rock) with three first place finishes. Loutchouk won the 1,000 (11:08.52) and 500 (5:28.57) freestyles and 200 IM (2:21.65). Brittany Cole (fr. Linden, NJ/Linden) came in first in the 50 freestyle (25.28) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:06.76). Laura Flynn (so. Andover, NJ/Lenape Valley) took second in the 100 butterfly (1:07.22) followed by Tracey Keelan (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) third (1:10.54). Kristine Bates (sr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) was second in the 100 freestyle (56.13). Tracey Groel (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.05).
The Rowan women won the 200 medley relay (1:58.24) with Kate Winters (fr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Meghan McCourt (so. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Anne O’Gorman (fr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Samantha Edwards (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown). The 200 freestyle relay posted a winning time of 1:30.97. The free relay included Stacey Rahter (fr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Christine DiRubbo (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Aileen Milde (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and Alicia Mackleer (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest).
The women had first places in six individual events. Edwards was a double winner with victories in the 100 (56.01) and 200 (2:04.37) freestyles. Ashley Gagnon (so. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) was second in the 200 individual medley (2:22.83) and O’Gorman came in third (2:24.88). Gagnon also came in second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.44). O’Gorman was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.16. In the 100 backstroke, Winters and Mackleer finished first (1:01.57) and second (1:06.66) respectively. Samantha King (so. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) was the winner in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.98).
Julianne Furdyna (fr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was second in the 1000 freestyle (11:18.71) followed by King third (11:24.97). Mackleer had a second place in the 200 freestyle (2:06.97) while Milde was second in the 50 free (25.45). Milde was also second in the 500 free (5:29.13) and McCourt was third (5:40.97). Rahter took third in the 100 freestyle (57.73).
Rowan hosts Division II Kutztown University in the last home meet of the season on Saturday, February 2 at 1 p.m.
