CAMDEN, NJ – Rowan University had five players score in double figures in an 80-76 win over Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Rowan improves to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Rutgers-Camden is 6-10 overall with a 1-4 NJAC mark. The Profs were led by guards Gina Catanzariti (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Kristina Wallace (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) with 16 points apiece. Wallace also dished seven assists, while Catanzariti had four. Forward Ashley Cieplicki (jr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) contributed with 12 points and five rebounds. Forward Kaitlin Guy (jr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and guard Brynn DeGroff (jr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) scored 11 and 10 points respectively. DeGroff recorded seven assists and four steals and forward Amanda Jennings (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) grabbed a team-high seven boards.
For the Scarlet Raptors, guard Amber Parker (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) had a game-high 19 points and picked up five assists. Guard Imani Hafiz (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) added 15 points and six rebounds. Forward Karima Blackwell (fr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) posted 10 points and a game best eight rebounds.
Rowan led 39-37 at the intermission. Hafiz hit a jumper at 17:45 to tie the game at 41. Rowan reeled off the next eight points for a 49-41 advantage at 16:27. Rowan was ahead by six (56-50) after a layup by Cieplicki at 13:04. Rutgers-Camden went on a 10-2 run to lead 60-58 at 9:11. Blackwell totaled four points in the stretch. Guy connected on two free throws at 9:01 to put the Profs up by one (61-60). Parker’s three-pointer at 4:58 tied the game at 70. A three-pointer (3:56) and a layup (3:18) by DeGroff made the score 75-70. Hafiz sunk a foul shot at 1:53 to trail by two (75-73). Guy’s layup with 22 second left put Rowan ahead by five (79-74). Guard Carmen Oyola’s (sr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) layup at the 13 second mark brought the Scarlet Raptors within three (79-76), but Jennings made a free throw with one second remaining to seal the victory.
The game was tied six times in the first half with the last one coming at 8:09 (26-26). Rowan scored six straight points to go up 32-26 at 5:28. Guy had four points and Catanzariti made a layup. Blackwell’s layup with 1:51 remaining narrowed the deficit to one point (36-35). Catanzariti answered with a three-pointer at 1:35 (39-35). Guards Krystal Jankowski (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) and Sarah Gorbe (fr. Riverside, NJ/Riverside) each made a free throw at 1:06 and 00:30 respectively to make the score 39-37 at halftime. Parker was the scoring leader at the break with 14 points. Hafiz followed with 10 for the Scarlet Raptors. Catanzariti posted 13 points for the Profs.
