NEWARK, NJ – Guard Angel Collado scored the winning basket for Rutgers-Newark in a 60-59 win over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.

Rowan was ahead 59-58 after forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) made a layup with 36 seconds remaining. Rutgers-Newark had a three-pointer attempt by forward David Cherry (jr. Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) at the 12 second mark and forward Derryck Alexander (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) grabbed the rebound. Collado (sr. Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) recorded the game winner with four ticks left on the clock.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Scarlet Raiders were led by guard Chadd Barnes (jr. Newark, NJ/University) with 15 points. Forward Deshawn Singleton (so. Passaic, NJ/Passaic) and Cherry each contributed with 11 points. Alexander ended the game with 12 rebounds while Cherry had nine.

Rowan has a record of 9-4 and a 0-3 NJAC mark. Guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) scored a game-high 16 points. Reevey compiled 11 points and nine rebounds. Guard Billy Care (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added nine points and seven rebounds.

The score was tied at 36 after the first half. The Scarlet Raiders started the final period with an 8-1 run to lead by seven points (44-37) at 16:37. Forward Phil Barnes (so. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) had six of the eight points. The Profs pulled within three points (46-43) at 11:13 on guard Michael Farrow’s (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) foul shot. Barnes put Rutgers-Newark back up by 10 (53-43) with a three at 9:40. With 4:24 left, Alexander hit two free throws for a seven point lead (57-50). The Profs answered with a 7-1 surge to trail by one (58-57) at 1:34. Guard Aaron Spellman (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) hit a three (2:49) and Darby had a jumper (2:10). Care cut the deficit to one (58-57) with two foul shots (1:34).

The score was tied five times in the first period. Rutgers-Newark led by seven points (14-7) at 15:08 after Cherry’s layup. Rowan had seven straight points to tie the score at 12:49. The Scarlet Raiders went back up by six points (22-16) with 8:34 remaining. Rowan took the lead (24-22) with a three-pointer by Darby at 7:01. Cherry’s basket tied the score at 6:39. His free throw gave Rutgers-Newark a three point advantage (34-31) with 3:02 left. Care tied the score at 34 with a three at 1:51. The Scarlet Raiders were ahead 36-34 when Care made two fouls at the 47 second mark to end the half.

Rowan returns home on Monday, January 14 against Penn State Abington at 6 p.m.
