NEWARK, NJ – Four players scored in double figures to lead the Rutgers-Newark women’s basketball team over visiting Rowan University, 75-61 in a conference game on Saturday evening.
It was the first conference win of the season for the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark is 11-3 overall and 1-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Rowan has an overall record of 8-5 with a 2-1 NJAC mark.
Guards Bimpe Fageyinbo (jr. Morris Plains, NJ/Paramus Hills) and Youngor Kehleay (jr. Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) each totaled 13 points for the Scarlet Raiders. Center Stephanie Ross (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Forward Eni Fageyinbo (sr. Morris Plains, NJ/Paramus Hills) contributed with 10 points.
For the Profs, forward Amanda Jennings (so. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) scored a career high 14 points and guard Brynn DeGroff (jr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) added 10 points. Forwards Jessica Nimbley (so. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Jillian Kane (so. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) and guard Kristina Wallace (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) had eight points apiece.
Rutgers-Newark started the game with seven straight points in 3:07. Ross made the first two baskets while guard Sabrina Sanchez (sr. Keasbey, NJ/Woodbridge) hit a three-pointer. Rowan pulled within one point (7-6) at 15:06 after forward Ashley Cieplicki’s (jr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) layup. With 8:11 left, the Scarlet Raiders were ahead 19-14. They scored 10 unanswered points to lead by 15 (29-14) at 6:16. Bimpe Fageyinbo scored five of the 10 points. Rutgers-Newark had an advantage of 18 points (41-23) after Eni Fageyinbo’s layup with 1:22 remaining. At the intermission, the Scarlet Raiders were up 41-24.
In the second half, Rutgers-Newark was ahead 46-24 at 18:21. The Profs cut the deficit to 11 points (52-41) after Wallace nailed a jumper at the 12 minute mark. The Scarlet Raiders answered with seven straight points to lead by 18 (59-41) at 10:36. Rowan pulled within 10 points (67-57) with 2:47 left in the game. Rutgers-Newark followed with an 8-4 run to seal the victory.
Rowan’s next game is at home on Monday, January 14 against Penn State Abington at 8 p.m.
