Fifth Ranked Salisbury Defeats Rowan, 2-1

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury University field hockey team defeated visiting Rowan University, 2-1 on Tuesday.

The Sea Gulls have won eight straight games and they have a 9-1 record. Rowan is 4-3 on the season. In this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Poll, Salisbury is ranked fifth in the nation while Rowan is 12th.

All of the scoring came in the first half. Salisbury got on the scoreboard with a goal by back Kristina Holland (sr. Pocomoke, MD/Pocomoke) with an assist from back Michelle Rowe (so. Elkton, MD/Elkton) on a penalty corner. Five minutes later, midfielder Abby Tedford (fr. Chester, MD/Kent Island) made the score 2-0 with an unassisted goal.

Forward Rachel Cheafsky (sr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) found the net for Rowan at 23:48. It was her fifth goal of the year. Salisbury ended the game with 16 shots and Rowan took 10. In the Profs’ net, goalie Amanda Cucinotti (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) made 12 stops. For the Sea Gulls, goalie Maria Ramoundos (sr. Gloucester, NJ/Highland Reg.) had six saves.

Rowan is back at home on Saturday, September 29 against Wesley College at 1 p.m.
