GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Matt Flynn scored two goals to lead the Rowan University men’s soccer team to a 4-2 victory over visiting St. Joseph’s College (LI) on Wednesday.
Rowan improves to 3-1, while St. Joseph’s has a 2-2-1 record. Profs’ forward Jay Vigilante (jr. Manasquan, NJ/Wall) recorded one goal and two assists, while midfielder Peter Malkmus (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) found the net once. Forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven), midfielder Michael Pascale (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) and back Eric Campesi (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had one assist apiece.
For the Golden Eagles, midfielders Rob Villano (sr. Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) and Adam Rogers (so. Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) each scored once. Back John Lyons (so. Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) and midfielder Chris Kunzig (sr. Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) both provided one assist.
Rowan outshot St. Joseph’s, 23-14. Goalkeeper Charles Cunliffe (fr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) played the first 26:44 for the Profs, making five saves. Kevin Nuss (sr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Dave Schindewolf (fr. Robbinsville, NJ/Lawrence) split time in net for the remainder of the game. Schindewolf stopped three shots. Goalie Marco Saccoccio (sr. Holtsville, NY/Sachem) made 10 saves for the Golden Eagles.
The game was tied (1-1) at halftime. Rogers’ goal at 49:12 off a rebound by Kunzig put St. Joseph’s up 2-1. Rowan scored three goals in the last 30 minutes for the victory. Malkmus started the surge with a goal at 60:21 on a cross from Vigilante. Flynn’s (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) second goal at 71:42 off a feed from Pascale and Reevey gave the Profs a 3-2 lead. Vigilante added an insurance goal on a breakaway at 82:54 to seal the victory.
In the first period, Villano headed in a pass from Lyons at 21:05 for a 1-0 advantage. Four minutes later, Flynn tied the game when he deflected a shot off of a St. Joseph’s defender that found the back of the net.
Rowan hosts Montclair State University in its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener on Saturday, September 15 at 7 p.m.
