GLASSBORO, NJ – The Ursinus College field hockey team edged host Rowan University, 5-4 in the season opener on Friday night. Ursinus is the defending national champion.
After trailing at the half, Rowan came back with two straight goals to tie the score at four. With 4:55 remaining, forward Lindsay Cappa recorded the game winner unassisted. Forward Rachel Cheafsky (sr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) pulled the Profs with one at 44:48. Forward Kiley Graham (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tied it with an assist from back Kimberly Brozosky (jr. Richwood, NJ/Clearview Reg.) at 62:20.
Cheafsky and Graham each finished the game with two goals. Cappa also had one assist. Forward Kait Sutherland and Meredith Stabley both contributed with one goal and one assist for Ursinus. Midfielder Jennie Moore and midfielder Jessica Zatwarnicki added one goal apiece.
Stabley put Ursinus on the scoreboard first with an assist from Sutherland at 8:36. Two minutes later Cheafsky had her first goal on a pass from forward Amanda Greene (jr. Thorofare, NJ/Gloucester City). Graham gave the Profs a 2-1 lead with an unassisted goal at 11:52. Moore followed with a tying goal at 16:28. Capps and Sutherland scored at 21:50 and 23:22 respectively. Ursinus was ahead 4-2 at the intermission.
The Bears recorded 20 shots while the Profs had 10. Ursinus goalie Jessica Lamina stopped five shots. For Rowan, Amanda Cucinotti (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) and Amber Rosenberger (fr. Millville, NJ/Millville) made three and eight saves respectively.
Ursinus is ranked first in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Preseason Poll and Rowan is 10th. Last year, Ursinus won the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Messiah College in the final.
Next Rowan travels to Catholic University on Monday, September 3 for a 1 p.m. contest.
