GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team started the season with a 7-1 win over Medgar Evers College in the first round of the Harrison House Invitational.
In the other first round game, The College of New Jersey defeated Baruch College, 2-0. On Saturday, The College of New Jersey plays Medgar Evers at 5 p.m. followed by Baruch against host Rowan at 7 p.m.
Rowan was led by forward Matt Flynn (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) with two goals and one assist. Forward Tom Gannon (sr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) contributed with a goal while forward Sean Goldsworthy (sr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) had an assist. Midfielders Andrew Finger (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Peter Malkmus (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) and Justin List (sr. Pedricktown, NJ/Penns Grove) had one goal apiece.
For Medgar Evers, forward Kerry Celestine scored the lone goal. Rowan outshot Medgar Evers, 21-4. Cougars goalie Kessill Robinson made eight saves. The Profs’ goaltending duties were shared by Kevin Nuss (sr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Charles Cunliffe (fr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood). Nuss was in goal the first half while Cunliffe had two saves in the second.
Malkmus put Rowan on the scoreboard first at 14:59 when he knocked in a rebound. Celestine tied the score seven minutes later. Flynn had his first goal at 23:05 on a corner kick and Gannon picked up the assist.
Flynn started the scoring in the second half at 71:23. Finger (72:16), Gannon (81:48) and List (82:25) each followed with a goal. The Profs' fifth goal was an own goal (76:14)
