Kean Sweeps Doubleheader At Rowan

 
GLASSBORO, NJ – The Kean University baseball team won both games of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Rowan University on Saturday. Kean had a 7-2 victory in the first game and a 3-1 win in the second.
 
The Cougars improve to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Rowan has an 11-11 overall record and a 3-4 NJAC mark. In the first game, Kean pitcher Joseph Augustine (sr. Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) scattered four hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out eight batters. Augustine (4-1) had a no-hitter through 7.1 innings. Pitcher Ryan Kulik (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) gave up four earned runs in six innings in the loss.
 
Catcher/right fielder Derek Gianakas (jr. Edison, NJ/Edison) led the Cougars with three hits (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. First baseman Aaron Richard (sr. Plainfield, NJ/St. Joseph) went one for three with two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Designated hitter Mike Shymanski (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) had one hit (three at bats) and three RBIs. Right fielder/left fielder Dan Mattonelli (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) added one hit, one run scored and one RBI.
 
For Rowan, shortstop Tim Barnshaw (so. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) had one hit in two at bats and one run scored. Right fielder Tim Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) record one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Center fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) knocked in one run, while left fielder Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) scored one run.
 
Kean scored five runs in the first inning. Second baseman Maikel De La Rosa (jr. Newark, NJ/Barringer) scored on an error. Gianakas had a RBI single and Mattonelli scored on an error. Shymanski drove in Gianakas and Richard with a single. The Cougars added two runs in the third inning. Gianakas came home on a sacrifice fly and Richard scored on Shymanski’s ground out. Rowan’s two runs came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Turley crossed the plate on a ground out by Hasenauer and Edmead’s single brought Barnshaw home.
 
In the second game, pitcher Daniel Zeffiro (sr. Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) went the distance for the Cougars, allowing one earned run and striking out six hitters. Pitcher Brian McLaughlin (sr. Glendora, NJ/Triton Reg.) gave up three earned runs and recorded seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings in the loss.
 
Richard led Kean with two hits (four at bats), one run scored and one double. Shortstop Perry Schatzow (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) had one hit (four at bats) and two RBIs. 
Center fielder Joseph D’Andrea (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) drove in one run and catcher Kevin O’Neill (jr. Union, NJ/Union) and Gianakas each scored once. Third baseman Ryan Clark (jr. Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) added three hits (three at bats).
 
Third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) went one for four with a RBI. Turley scored the Profs’ only run. Barnshaw contributed with two hits in four trips to the plate.
 
In the top of the second inning, Schatzow hit a two run double to put Kean up 2-0. Rowan cut the deficit in half when Turley scored on a ground out by Ready in the bottom of the fourth. The Cougars added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. O’Neill came home on a fielder’s choice by D’Andrea.
 
Rowan travels to Widener University on Tuesday, April 10 for a 3:30 p.m. nonconference game.
