Rowan Comeback Halted In 9-7 Loss To TCNJ

GLASSBORO, NJ – The College of New Jersey women’s lacrosse team defeated host Rowan University, 9-7 on Wednesday night.

Midfielder Karen Doane (jr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) led the Lions with three goals and one assist. Doane has a career total of 104 goals. Midfielder Katie Reuther (so. Toms River, NJ/West Windsor N.) contributed with two goals while midfielders Toni Anne Cavallo (jr. Cedar Grove, NJ/W. Essex Reg.) and Jessica Falcone (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), attack Angela Wilmer (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and defender Kelly Mitchell (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each added one.

The College of New Jersey is undefeated with a 6-0 record and ranked first in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Poll. Rowan drops to 4-6 on the season.

For Rowan, attacks Katie Kline (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and Lauren Crennan (so. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) each scored twice. Midfielder Kelly Angstadt (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), attack Caitlin Meseroll (jr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) and defender Shana Smeriglio (sr. Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) all had one goal.

The Lions totaled 27 shots while the Profs took 16. In the TCNJ net, Caitlin Gregory (jr. Winslow, NJ/Eastern Reg.) made four saves. The Profs’ goalie Alicia Mannino (so. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) stopped 14 shots.

TCNJ started the game with three straight goals. Reuther had the first one assisted by Doane. Doane followed with two straight. Kline put Rowan on the scoreboard with 11:51 left in the half. The Lions then had another run of three straight goals. Mitchell and Reuther each recorded an unassisted goal while Doane hit the net on a free position. Kline scored her second goal with 3:17 remaining. TCNJ was ahead 6-2 at the intermission.

In the final period, TCNJ went up 9-2 with goals by Falcone, Wilmer and Cavallo. Rowan answered with five straight goals. Crennan started the rally with two straight in a three minute span. Angstadt, Smeriglio and Meseroll followed with one score apiece.

Rowan is home again on Saturday, April 7 against Drew University at noon. TCNJ travels to Gettysburg College on Friday, April 6 for a 4 p.m. contest.
