GLASSBORO, NJ – The Richard Stockton College baseball team defeated Rowan University, 2-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Monday.
With the win, the Ospreys improve to 21-12-1 overall and 9-8-1 in the conference. The Profs have a 21-15 overall record and a 10-8 NJAC mark. Both teams earned berths in the NJAC Championship Tournament.
In the first round on Thursday, May 3, sixth seeded Richard Stockton will play at top seeded Kean University, fifth seeded Rowan will travel to second seeded The College of New Jersey and fourth seeded Ramapo College is at the three seed Montclair State University. All three games are at 3 p.m. The double elimination tournament continues on Saturday-Monday, May 5-7 at Bears and Eagles Stadium in Newark, NJ.
Right hander Sean Donovan (so. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) pitched a complete game shutout, hit first of the season. Donovan struck out five batters for his third victory. Left hander Gary Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) gave up two earned runs and struck out six hitters in the loss.
Right fielder Craig Rich (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) went one for one and had the Osprey’s only RBI. Second baseman Brian Paras (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) and catcher Greg Hunt (fr. Marlton, NJ/St. Joseph’s) each contributed with one hit and one run scored. Shortstop Eddie Ortiz (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added two hits in four at bats.
For Rowan, center fielder Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and shortstop Tim Barnshaw (so. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) each had two hits. One of Barnshaw’s hits was a double.
Richard Stockton got its first run in the top of the first inning. Paras crossed home plate on a double steal. In the top of the fourth, Rich singled to center field, scoring Hunt.
